I was curious about this too, so I looked into it and it’s actually really interesting. While it may seem like an arbitrary choice that wasn’t well thought out on the part of the author, it turns out it wasn’t a choice! Stephenie Meyer just doesn’t have a brain with which she could think things through even if she wanted to.
